Maison Martin Margiela

After graduating in 1980 Martin Margiela worked as a freelance designer for five years - two years of which were under the genius of  Jean Paul Gaultier.

His first collection under his own label was launched in 1989. From 1997 to 2003, despite his non-traditional design he was appointed creative director of womens wear at Hermès.

Martin Margiela is notorious for revolting against the luxurious fashion world with garments of oversized proportions such as long arms, and with linings, seams and hems on the outside. The concept of deconstruction, is important for the understanding of Martin Margiela's fashion statement. Margiela famously redesigns by hand objects such as old wigs, canvases and silk scarves into extraordinary couture garments.

Today saw the launch of his collaboration with high street giants H&M, a more accessible approach to his creations.

TO DIOR FOR.

Christian Dior is the Godfather of modern fashion. He set a standard that has been admired and adhered to for decades. In 1946 Dior founded his Fashion house, sadly he only lived to see 11 years at the head of his label, while on holiday in Italy in 1957 he died of a heart attack.

Dior's death left the House in chaos, After nearly closing completely, a 21 year old by the name of Yves Saint Laurent was made Artistic Director, Dior himself had picked YSL as the first ever and only Head Assistant.

In 1997 CEO Arnault appointed John Galliano to replace Gianfranco Ferre. 
Galliano brought a colorful and theatrical flamboyance to the catwalk and to the identity of Dior, by now the fashion industry was more than used to the unconventional and absurd, but Galliano still managed to cause a stir and have the Paris fashion community scratching their heads.

2012, Raf Simons, one of the most important fashion designers of the last 10 years is now creative director of Christian Dior, His first two collections have been met with absolute appreciation.
He is probably the only designer since YSL that has taken the top seat at Dior and not had the man himself turning in his grave.

We are very proud to have in store three beautiful examples of classic Christian Dior from the 1960's to the 1990's.

Alexander McQueen

 Alexander McQueen, Born on 17 March 1969 in Lewisham, London. The infamous bad boy of British Fashion. The most anticipated show of every fashion week schedule, uncompromising and unparalleled in theatrical worth. Love him or hate him he was a truly expressive, anarchic yet poetic designer.

He was classically trained as a tailor on Savile Row, the center of the tailoring universe and worked for clients such as Prince Charles and Mikhail Gorbachev after leaving school at 16 with just one o-level in art.

McQueen also spent a period of time working for Koji Tatsuno before travelling to Milan Italy to work for Romeo Gigli.

The strictness of the tailoring discipline was obviously too limiting for an imagination such as McQueen and he eventually ended up working with theatrical costume designers Angels and Bermans, however the skills he learned on saville row helped him throughout his career as he became famous for perfect cutting and tailoring as a foundation for his theatrical and artistic collections.

Spring summer 2010, was sadly one of the final collections that Alexander McQueen created. It was widely regarded as a groundbreaking transition for Fashion that had everybody transfixed once again.

J is for Jil

Jil Sander graduated in textile engineering in 1963.

In 1967 she opened a boutique in Hamburg within which she sold designers such as Thierry Mugler, and Sonya Rykiel, as well as some of her own very first pieces. 

In 1968 she launched her label Jil Sander GMBH.

these minimalist collections with focus on fabric quality were not appreciated on the Paris catwalks in the way they are now, and only gained mass attention in the 1990's.

Jil Sander has recently returned to her ever brilliant fashion Label after 7 years of hibernation and invisibility as far as fashion design has been concerned.

Her label has been in her own words 'well looked after' by Raf Simons who took the label in some very interesting new directions but continued the flawless integrity and identity that Jil was so famous for.

DESIGNER PROFILE: Maison Martin Margiela

Martin Margiela began his own collections at the age of 32 in 1989, under the now house hold name Maison Martin Margiela. The end of the 80s was a crucial time for the progress of fashion, Rei Kawekubo had already shaken the foundations of the industry which for many was the beginning of a revolution, along with the Antwerp Six, Margiela was concerned with undermining the conventional and luxurious image that the high fashion world was so well known for.

He did this by using unconventional proportions and genius textile manipulation, like long arms and with linings hems and seams on the outside of garments.

Margiela remained completely anonymous throughout his career and avoided interviews and pictures and always remained backstage after shows, all media contact is said to have been dealt with via fax.
